چکیده
This is a tutorial on scanning and fixed beam transmission electron microscope image simulation using the multislice method. It is the second in a series of lectures given in the summer school held at Cornell Univ. in the summer of 2006.

An efficient way of including thermal diffuse scattering in simulation of scanning transmission electron microscopic images.
We propose an improved image simulation procedure for atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on the multislice formulation, which takes thermal diffuse scattering fully into account. The improvement with regard to the classical frozen phonon approach is realized by separating the lattice configuration statistics from the dynamical scattering ...
متن کاملA streaming multi-GPU implementation of image simulation algorithms for scanning transmission electron microscopy
Simulation of atomic-resolution image formation in scanning transmission electron microscopy can require significant computation times using traditional methods. A recently developed method, termed plane-wave reciprocal-space interpolated scattering matrix (PRISM), demonstrates potential for significant acceleration of such simulations with negligible loss of accuracy. Here, we present a softwa...
متن کاملA fast image simulation algorithm for scanning transmission electron microscopy
Image simulation for scanning transmission electron microscopy at atomic resolution for samples with realistic dimensions can require very large computation times using existing simulation algorithms. We present a new algorithm named PRISM that combines features of the two most commonly used algorithms, namely the Bloch wave and multislice methods. PRISM uses a Fourier interpolation factor f th...
متن کاملGeometrical Analysis of Field - Ion Images
Field ion microscopy (FIM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and computer simulation techniques have been used to experimentally investigate the field ion image geometry. Electron micrographs and electron diffraction patterns were obtained from tungsten specimens after controlled amounts of field evaporation. From a knowledge of the changes in the image dimensions as a function of the var...
متن کاملProgress in Applications of Quantitative STEM
High-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is highly sensitive to the type and number of atoms in the atomic columns of a sample. Image contrast in HAADF-STEM agrees quantitatively with image simulations [1]. An important complementary method in STEM is position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction (PACBED), which is highly sensitive to infor...
